Dear Dr. Peacock:

The following action regarding your institution was taken by the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges during its meeting held on December 9, 2013.

The SACSCOC Board of Trustees reaffirmed accreditation. No additional report was requested. Your institution’s next reaffirmation will take place in 2023 unless otherwise notified.

Please submit to your Commission staff...

Last week, the On-Site Review Committee visited campus and led a successful peer review of our compliance issues and our Quality Enhancement Plan!  Good results on every front; Appalachian's students, staff, and faculty truly impressed them!  Thank you for all of your hard work and organization!

Below is the email that Dr. Peacock shared with campus following the visit:

Here is a quick link to the toolkit, "Preparing for the On-Site Visit of the SACSCOC Commission on Colleges."  Please feel free to share with colleagues, or print and post pages from the toolkit on bulletin boards around campus!  It's important to remember that possible interviews with SACSCOC Review Committee members will likely take place on the afternoon of April 9, 2013 and during the...

It has been a long time since I posted here, but that's because we have been busy editing the Compliance Certification and preparing it for review!  In September, we submitted the document to the SACSCOC Off-Site Review Team, and they have responded positively to our report.  They asked for follow-up information in a few selected areas, which we will respond to in a Focused Report and help address during their On-Site Review Visit in April.

Right now, everyone on campus can...

Last week, the Appalachian State University Board of Trustees met.  We wanted to give them a short, but informative summary of our progress toward the SACSCOC reaffirmation of our accreditation status in 2013.  I'll upload the one-page summary we prepared for them into the section of the website called Overview:  Presentations & Timelines.  I thought it might be interesting to others as well.  It includes a brief description of our progress on the QEP as well as...

Today, I'm going to talk to Faculty Senate about the SACS Compliance Certification.  Dr. Carey already spoke to them about the Quality Enhancement Plan.  I'll attach here a copy of the presentation I'm giving.  I hope they ask some great questions -- and take back any pertinent information to their departments.  This is the first time I've talked to a representative from every department on campus since I presented to all of the chairs at the Hubbard Center in 2010....

It's hard to believe, but it's been almost two years of working on the reaffirmation of Appalachian State's accreditation status with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges division for thirteen sub-committees.  In that time, we have bugged almost everyone working in the University for some type of information or data to help provide evidence within our report.  By the end of this month, we'll have a good draft of every one of the narratives for our...

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 - 4pm

During the SACSCOC annual meeting in 2011, held every December -- this year in Orlando, Florida -- a new edition of the Principles of Accreditation was voted on by the SACSCOC membership and passed.  We will have to use this new edition of the Principles to form our report due in September 2012.  New standards to understand and respond to, with a short turnaround time!

Many of the revisions are clarifications of wording, which make it slightly easier to understand....

Friday, November 5, 2010 - 4pm

One big problem I see on campus is that everybody hasn’t heard the same message about assessment. Between trying to learn TracDat, figuring out the General Education assessment plan, looking at program goals and student learning outcomes, and everything else SACSCOC related, some people I talk to are – not surprisingly – frustrated and confused. What should we be doing? Why are we doing these things? What does SACSCOC expect from us?

SACSCOC expects (in their standard 3.3.1) for...

Friday, August 6, 2010 - 2pm

Is it possible to get excited about re-accreditation? Perhaps. The new accreditation standards are a positive change in that they encourage us to reflect upon the connections between our daily work and the overall goals of Appalachian State University. The reaffirmation criteria are predicated upon a commitment to integrity and quality enhancement. Such principles resonate particularly well at Appalachian, and people who enjoy looking at the “big picture” may enjoy at least...

Friday, August 6, 2010 - 2pm

Since the University last underwent successful reaffirmation in 2002, SACSCOC has carried out a major revision of its criteria and published them as Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement. The new criteria cover many aspects important to the management of an excellent institution of higher education, but place a special emphasis on integrity, quality improvement, and student learning. Gone is the...
